Struntje Light by Wolfgang Schaefer, is the 2003 European Champion.

After the 2002 Porto Rotondo Euros, losed at the final day, this year the very regular crew leaded by Schaefer defintively won the Championship.

La 9ème et dernière manche du programme s’est déroulé par un vent oscillant entre 120° et 95 ° en direction et entre 6 et 10 nœuds de vitesse.
Peu après le départ, le Français HAGAKURE skippé par Michel TIBERINI et François BRENAC, et le Norvégien NORWEGIAN STEAM prenaient le pouvoir, le Norvégien forçait le passage à la bouée au vent et se trouvait obligé de réparer, laissant la direction de la course aux Français. Ceux-ci n’eurent de cesse d’augmenter leur avance jusqu’à l’arrivée, emportant la manche devant l’Anglais GAME ON et le Néerlandais MEAN MACHINE.
Pour le classement général, la première place restait aux Allemands de STRUTJE LIGHT, mais les places suivantes subissaient un changement dû à la contre-performance de SEVEN.
Cette manche clôture le Championnat d’Europe des Farr 40.
Le titre est attribué au bateau Allemand STRUNTJE LIGHT qui s’il n’a gagné aucune manche, a été remarquable de régularité.
Ce bateau a la particularité d’être mené par Mr et Mme SCHAEFFER, qui est une navigatrice au moins aussi acharnée que son mari.

It's, as always on this class, a great show in the south of France for the 2003 FARR 40 Euros.

We already run 8 races but still we'll have 1 more race and everything could happens in this championship without discard.

The german Struntje Light owned by Wolfgang Schaefer is in the 1.st place followed by 3 boats at 38 points (Seven by Alberto Signorini, Victric 5 by John Demulder and Mean Machine by Peter de Ridder).

Tomorrow we will have a very hot race....stay with us...

Le temps s’est remis au beau. Le Comité attendait une brise thermique, elle s’est levée au Sud en cours de matinée pour s’établir au Sud-Ouest en cours d’après-midi avec une vitesse de 8 à 15 nœuds.
La première manche, très indécise, a vu une arrivée très disputée entre l’Anglais VICTRIC 5 barré par Tony de Mulder et l’Allemand STRUNTJE LIGHT skippé par Wolfgang Schaefer.
Le deuxième manche suivait un scénario identique si ce n’est que SEVEN cette fois prenait la tête pour ne plus la quitter. Il gagnait la manche devant TWT skippé par Marco Rodolfi et le Hollandais MEAN MACHINE skippé par Peter de Ridder.
La troisième manche gênée par une bascule du vent, voyait cette fois une lutte acharnée entre le Hollandais MEAN MACHINE, l’Italien TWT et le Norvégien NORWEGIAN STEAM.
MEAN MACHINE gardait l’avantage à l’arrivée mais NORWEGIAN STEAM coiffait TWT à 20 mètres de l’arrivée.
Tous ces évènements n’ont pas réussi à détourner STRUNTJE LIGHT, qui par sa remarquable régularité règne sur le Classement Général, sans avoir gagné une manche.

It was a wet day all around, with big waves washing over the boats in 20-25 knots of breeze, and rain starting just as the first race finished. Norwegian Steam, driven by owner Eivind Astrup, took a commanding lead on the last downwind leg of the race, passing the Australian entry Kokomo and leaving them in her wake. Lang Walker's boat and team from down under were able to catch the last big wave of their race to surf past Struntje Light at the finish line after a neck and neck battle down the run.

The race committee signalled a postponement ashore when the rain clouds burst open, taking into consideration their forecast of 30-40 knots in the storm. The teams went back out after the rain stopped at 3:00 p.m. local time for two more races to finish out the day. A shift in the wind direction flattened out the seas that had been piling up in the bay.

The post-frontal winds for the racing in Hyeres after the shoreside postponement were predictably lighter and shifty, with a persistent backing to the left as the weather system moved through. The competitors were a bit anxious to get restarted after the storm, which resulted in several general recalls before the ominous black flag was hoisted. The fifth race of the series finally got started around 5:00 p.m. local time, and it was quite the battle in the mercurial conditions. The shifty winds were a challenge, and nothing was certain until the finish line was crossed. The dark blue boats of Tony de Mulder (Victric) and Lang Walker (Kokomo) worked their way through the fleet to finish first and second, respectively, with the Dutch boat owned by Peter de Ridder in third place. A fourth place finish for the German team on Struntje Light perpetuates their reign as the regatta leaders.

Sunshine and lighter winds are predicted for tomorrow, to further test the all around skills of the sailor's competing at the European Championship.

Les prévisions météorologiques se sont révélées justes pour cette deuxième journée de régate puisque seulement 2 manches ont pu être courues.
C’est sous un ciel menaçant accompagné d’un vent d’Est d’une moyenne de 20 nœuds, que le départ de la 1ière manche a été donné à 12h00.
Avec des pointes de vitesse a plus de 18 nœuds sans spinnaker, c’est NORWEGIAN STEAM skippé par Eivind ASTRUP représentant la Norvège qui l’emporte.
L’équipage nous a avoué que le vent et la pluie leur rappellent les meilleures conditions de temps de leur pays.
Pour la seconde manche, le vent a légèrement faibli pour tomber à 8 nœuds.
Les conditions plus techniques ont provoqué des changements continuels en tête de course.
Sur la ligne l’Anglais VICTRIC skippé par Tony DE MULDER coiffait l’Australien KOKOMO d’un cheveu.
Cette journée a vu le recul assez net des vainqueurs du premier jour, les Italiens BREEZE et SEVEN étant assez moyens.
Seul l’Allemand STRUNTJE LIGHT skippé par Wolfgang SCHAEFER résistait et gardait ainsi la tête du classement général.

The morning of the first day of racing for the Farr 40 European Championship started out with the row of country flags on the bulkhead snapping crisply in a 12-17 knot breeze. The row of 15 Farr 40s that were lined up behind them had great conditions all day on the Bay of Hyeres. Competitors reported that the breeze was up and down, a bit shifty and all around perfect racing.

The Italians took line honours for all three windward/leeward races. Vincenzo Onorato's Breeze got two bullets, and Alberto Signorini's Seven won the third race of the day. It was the German team of Wolfgang and Angela Schaefer that wound up at the top of the scoreboard though, with a consistent performance on their Struntje Light.

Racing continues tomorrow with more wind forecast.
