 Punta Ala Final Report

11/06/2003

 Punta Ala ITA
The Italian resort village of Punta Ala, nestled along the Tuscan coast, with the Island of Elba providing a dramatic backdrop, was the scene of the second Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Mediterranean Circuit event. Twenty-seven boats representing 10 different countries participated, making it one of the largest Farr 40 events ever staged. Teams from Australia, Japan, Great Britain, Norway, Greece, France, Germany, Holland, the United States and Italy were eager to hone their skills in anticipation of next months Rolex Farr 40 Worlds Championships in Porto Cervo.

Day 1 - Three-race regatta was contested under blue skies with a delightful 10-15 knots breeze providing ideal racing conditions. The first race saw Mark Heeley with Gold Medallist Iain Percy behind him, and GBR25 win the pin end of the starting line and spring out to the left. A favorable shift enabled GBR25 to cross ahead of 2000 World Champion John Calvert-Jones, reunited with tactician Grant Simmer, and control the race to the finish, with Southern Star second and the UK's John Oswald with Game On, third.

In race two, the fleet again tried its luck on the left but this time two boats, Deneen Demourkas' Groovederci, with two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Reynolds by her side, and Michael Illbruck's Nela came out of the hard right to lead around the top mark. The two leaders staged a seesaw battle the rest of the way around the four leg windward-leeward course. Ultimately Nela, with Volvo race winner John Kostecki calling tactics, overtook the American boat and then hung on for dear life as Groovederci surged to the finish. Third place was reeled in by the SORC champions, Nerone with Antonio Sodo-Migliori helming and Vasco Vascotto calling tactics.

Race three saw a second German race winner but this time it was Wolfgang Schaefer and Struntje Light, who emerged victorious ahead of Jim Richardson's Barking Mad and Illbruck's Nela. The tight action in race three featured three fender benders between Vincenzo Onorato's Breeze and Southern Star, with Breeze accepting fault for the pile-up when she tacked onto port at the top mark and into the Australians.

With the sea breeze now building to 14-16 knots, Onorato recovered nicely from his collision in race three and went on to win race four. However, without winning any of the four races, the day clearly belonged to Jim Richardson, with Stars and Stripes tactician Terry Hutchinson calling the shots behind him, and the crew of Barking Mad. Barking Mad's remarkable consistency in the first four races (4-4-2-2) gave them a six point cushion over Nela and seven over Nerone. Norwegian Steam and Eivind Astrup placed third in the day's final race.

Day 2 - The promised sea breeze never materialized causing a very unsettling day for the race committee and the same for the world's greatest tactical minds. The day's first race saw Italy's Seven with Alberto Signorini at the helm lead around the top mark with Nerone second, Warlord third and Barking Mad fourth. As they converged on the bottom mark, Seven and Nerone went right, Warlord and Barking Mad sailed around the right hand gate and went left. When the four boats tacked, the British team on Warlord had surged to the lead and Nerone had overtaken Seven on the right. On the final downwind leg, Seven split away from her three closest contenders which cost her, as Barking Mad followed Phil Tolhurst, Chris Main and the crew of Warlord and Nerone across the line in third place.

Race six saw the breeze diminsh further in the 6-8 knot range. Again Seven took the early lead over Nela, Nerone and Barking Mad. This time however, Seven continued on to win with Nela second, Southern Star slid into third, with Barking Mad fourth as they approached the top of the second beat, sat in a hole and helplessly watched 12 other Farr 40s round ahead of them, putting Nela and Nerone atop the points table after six races.

The day's final race saw the Race Committee grow weary of signaling general recalls and fly the dreaded black flag. Six boats were sent home including Nela and Barking Mad. Barking Mad was later awarded redress when the Race Committee acknowledged they had made a mistake in identifying the American entry as one of the premature starters. The race itself, however, belonged to George Andreadis, former Olympic Gold Medallist Robbie Haines, and the crew of Atalanti X as they finished the day's last race at sunset in a dying breeze, with GBR25 second and Nerone third.

The struggles of the trying day on the water soon gave way to a wonderful dinner party for the onwers hosted by one ofthe Med Circuit sponsors, Boscolo Hotels. Well after the clock struck midnight, and the wine still flowed, more than one owner was hoping for a postponement of the next morning's races!

Day 3 - A calm start to the final day of the Championship gave way to a light easterly breeze ranging from 7 to 9 knots. Italian America's Cup syndicate head Vincenzo Onorato's Breeze was first to the top mark followed by Peter de Ridder's Mean Machine, Barking Mad, Groovederci and Nerone. Positions remained static until near the end of the second beat when Breeze tacked to cover Barking Mad and Groovederci, slowing the two American entries and thereby springing Nerone and Mean Machine. On the run to the finish Mean Machine rolled by Breeze but Nerone passed both boats to open a commanding 7 3/4 point lead going into the final race over Barking Mad.

In the regattas last race, Barking Mad had the advantage over Nerone at the start and used it well sending the Italian entry looking for clean air to the right hand side of the course. The left side of the course was paying dividends again and by the time the top two contenders arrived at the top mark, Barking Mad stood 11th but Nerone was well back in the fleet. Barking Mad continued to pass boats downwind and upwind and by the time they reached the last top mark, Richardson's crew stood 5th with Nerone back in 14th. While Barking Mad threatened but could not get by the third and fourth place boats, GBR25 and Tony De Mulder's Victric, it was Nerone's turn to go on the offensive. The Italians first passed Robin Paterson's Katanga to move into 13th, and when the boat from Milan rolled past Southern Star, Antonio Sodo Migliori and Massimo Mezzaroma claimed the second Med Championship event by a scant 3/4 of a point. Mediterranean Class President Alberto Signorini's Seven became the first dual race winner in the nine race series, good enough for third overall, followed in fourth by Nela and in fifth, Southern Star.

The final circuit event is scheduled for the last weekend in June in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia where as many as 37 boats are likely to participate. With the Med Circuit Championship up for grabs, Porto Rotondo promises to be a very exciting final tune-up before the Worlds. Things have never been better in the white hot Farr 40 Class!

 Surgery on board...

06/06/2003
we received from the Med Fleet President, this courious news from Mr. Schaefer, helmsman of Struntje light... Farr40 as a medical boat ? Read it !

"Hello Alberto,
I would like to thank you for all the input and effort you did to run the
Farr 40 class in Europe.
You did a really good job for the class and the result with probably 37
entries for the Worlds is absolutely great.
Punta Ala was a very good regatta with all these 27 boats - and quite hard
to do well.
Do you know that in Punta Ala probably was the first time that surgery has
done on board of a Farr 40 ? We had to do totally 10 stitches on the
forehaed of our mastman which was easy to do because of the multifunctional
interieur design of the boat."

Best regards
Wolfgang

Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Sailing Trophy - Boscolo Hotel Day

30/05/2003
 Punta Ala ITA

The second event of the Duetsche Bank Farr 40 Mediterranean Championship started today in Punta Ala, Italy. Conditions were perfect for the four windward leeward races that the very competitive fleet of 27 boats completed. The breeze was fairly steady and started light but built to a comfortable medium jib strength during the first race. Great racing was finished off by a poolside daily awards ceremony sponsored by Boscolo Hotels, complemented by a gorgeous sunset over Elba Island. Jim Richardson took home the winner of the day trophy by being consistent. There were four different race winners for the day - Mark Heeley - GBR 25, Deneen Demourkas - Groovederci, Michael Illbruck - Nela, and Wolfgang Schaefer - Struntje Light.

Prima giornata Boscolo Hotel a Punta Ala

30/05/2003
 Punta Ala ITA

 Andreadis wins the first event...

06/05/2003
 Capri ITA

Last Sunday was the final day of the first event of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Mediterranean Championship, hosted by the Capri Yacht Club. 21 boats from 6 countries sailed in light conditions due to a high pressure over Italy that did not allow the fleet to race with the normal sea breeze which is typical of the Gulf of Naples. The lack of wind forced the cancellation of  6 races and so only 3 were completed. George Andreadis sailed an excellent regatta to finish first overall. Second was the team of Raffaele Mincione  with Jim Richardson, President of the Class, third.

The winner of the AUDI day, the second day of each 2003 Mediterranean Event, was Wolfgang Schaefer who finished 4.th followed by Warlord helmed by Philip Tolhurst. Robin Paterson, at the helm of Katanga, advised by the Olympic silver medallist and GBR Challenge skipper Ian walker, finished 6th,  followed by the Med Fleet President Alberto Signorini with the 1996 J24 World Champion Chris Larson as tactician.

The competition was very closed and the level  impressively high: the proof  is  the final overall standings where  even sailing legends such as John kostecki (tactician with Paul Cayard in the past Americaone America's cup challenge and winner of the last Volvo Ocean Race) and Mark Reynolds (winner of the last 2 Olympic gold medal in the Star class) finished around 10th place.

The next event is scheduled at the end of May in Punta Ala and we expect some comebacks from crews that did not shine in this event, like the Mascalzone Latino America's Cup Challenge team, leaded by Vincenzo Onorato and Flavio Favini and Nerone’s team with Antonio Sodo and Vasco Vascotto.

See yah soon...

Comunicato Stampa n° 5 - Al greco George Andreadis la prima tappa del circuito Deutsche Bank Farr 40

04/05/2003
 Capri ITA
