Porto Rotondo ITA 30/06/02 – Silphea wins the Med

The morning postponement was signalled due to lack of wind today, as opposed to too much yesterday. Crews swam in the clear, blue water of the Mediterranean while waiting for the breeze. A moderate northeasterly from 8-16 knots filled in at noon for the final race of the series. The course was set in the bay on flat water, with more wind at the top of the course due to the geography of the surrounding hills. Conditions were challenging with lots of shifts and puffs, something which is difficult for even the local sailors to predict, according to Yacht Club Commodore Gian Battista Borea.

Boats on the first beat were divided into a pack in the middle and another on the far left. The middle paid, with Norwegian Steam leading that group, followed by Sylphea leading back from the left. It was an exciting mark rounding, with extremely close racing. Sylphea passed Norwegian Steam on the run, and Nerone moved into third. Both Sylphea and Nerone went around the left gate and back out to the middle left side of the run, which was sufficient to move the pair just in front of Norwegian Steam and Nela. In the continuing match race between the two Italian boats, they battled down the final run, with Sylphea holding the lead. The wind failed to cooperate at the finish, however, and as the wind velocity dropped, spinnakers were dropped in favor of jibs for a wind shift 50 meters from the finish line. Nerone was favored by the shift and moved into the passing lane, followed by Norwegian Steam. Sylphea finished third followed by Nela and Madina. Nerone was awarded average points for their request for redress after the incident with Struntje Light, which moved them to the top of the podium for the Porto Rotundo regatta. Sylphea is the overall winner of the Mediterranean Circuit, which consisted of the Naples, Porquerolles and Porto Rotundo events.

The Deutsche Bank trophy will be awarded to Sylphea, and the Boscolo Cup trophy will be awarded to Nerone.

Farr 40 racing will continue in Porto Cervo after a two day break. The Farr 40 European Championship runs from July 3-6 at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. North Sails is a Farr 40 Class sponsor for this event.

Porto Rotondo ITA 29/06/02 – Madina maintains the lead with one day left

A postponement was signalled on shore at 1000 a.m. to allow competitors to enjoy their coffee and brioche at the hospitable Yacht Club Porto Rotundo while the mistral exhausted itself. The first start of the day's two windward leeward courses was in 6-17 knots of wind from the the northwest just before 1:00p.m. Buoys were set further inside the bay where the water was sheltered. The wind was very unpredictable however, as it filtered over the mountains and between islands in puffs and shifts, and increased to 17 knots by the end of the first race.

Boats were piled up at the Race Committee boat for the start, and points leader Madina started late but fast, and were able to sail over the slower boats into clear air. Alberto Signorini's Sylphea hooked into a lift on the left side of the first beat, which delivered him to the mark ahead of everyone. Nerone, then Eivind Astrup's Norwegian Steam were right behind. They took off down the run while the rest of the boats floundered into a hole just after rounding the top mark. The first three boats gained a lead of half a boat length on the fleet before the breeze filled in. A match race between Nerone and Sylphea started, with close cover by Nerone after they took the lead on the run. Sylphea got away from them on the next beat right before they got to the line of oncoming spinnakers, and regained the lead. The breeze filled in on the third leg, which made for some great one design racing. A pack of boats rounded the second offset mark six deep. Extremely close!
racing continued throughout the fleet. Sylphea and Nerone crossed the finish bow to bow, with Sylphea just edged ahead, and Norwegian Steam a solid third place. Madina had another single digit finish to hold onto her overall lead.

The race course was moved for the second race of the day to accomodate a shift to the north, with steadier wind at 16-18 knots. Sylphea and Warlord were at the pin end pre-start, but were unable to sail high enough to clear the mark, so had to circle around and start on port. Nerone had the same problem at the weather mark. After tacking below the layline, they were forced to sail inside the mark and circle around to pass on the required side.

This left the course open for several boats to fight for line honors. Shear Terror led around the first two legs, with Nela, Aleph and Madina close behind. Aleph sailed into the lead on the third leg, and stayed ahead of the crowd to surf across the finish line for the victory in Race 8, followed by Madina, then Norwegian Steam.

Racing concludes tomorrow, with one race scheduled. The Deutsche Bank trophy will be awarded to the overall winner of the Farr 40 Mediterranean Circuit, and the Boscolo Cup trophy will be awarded to the overall winner of the Porto Rotondo regatta.

Porto Rotondo ITA 28/06/02 – Second day…First place for Madina

The second day of racing saw a variety of conditions for the fleet. Light winds delayed the start until around noon, and built steadily throughout the afternoon as a front passed through the area, ending in mistal conditions. Three windward leeward races were completed on a sunny Mediterranean day for the Farr 40 fleet in their final regatta of the inaugural circuit in the Med.

The first race started with wind out of the northeast, at 6-12 knots. Points leader Nerone must have studied the weather forecast to predict the left trend that was persistent until the mistral kicked in. They sailed up the left side of the course on the first beat and once they gained the lead they didn't give it up. Philip Tolhurst's Warlord was a close second, and Dario Ferrari's Madina was in third. Katanga looked for breeze on the right side, which paid off yesterday, joined by Nela on the second beat, but it was not forthcoming.

Nela started well on the second race of the day in the building breeze, and took the lead at the weather mark with Sylphea close on her transom. Slyphea gybed first though, to take better breeze down to leeward mark, and held on to her lead the remainder of the race. The biggest shift during racing took place after rounding the weather mark, on the final leg of the second race. There was a combination of boats with spinnakers and jibs tight reaching in slightly less wind into the finish, so there weren't many position changes from the top mark rounding order.

The Race Committee postponed before the third race of the day to wait for the new breeze to settle in. It came in the form of a mistral from the northwest, at 20-25 knots for the start, ending up at around 30 knots for a wild final run to the finish.

Michael Illbruck's Nela liked the windier conditions, which is not surprising considering some of his crew came from his winning Volvo entry. They did battle with Tony Buckingham's A Bit of A Coup around the track. The English boat and crew were reveling in the Solent-style breeze too. They rounded the last weather mark abreast, but Illbruck had the inside advantage and surged ahead after the offset mark. There was a port-starboard incident at the mark shortly thereafter, with some minor crew injuries but enough damage to Wolfgang Schaefer's Struntje Light that it is unlikely that they will continue tomorrow. Nerone retired with minor damage of a broken jib halyard. It was a war of attrition to keep the spinnakers up for the final leg when a blast of mistral wind up to 30 knots launched the boats, which were planing over the waves at speed. Nela's tactician John Kostecki summed it up at the yacht club by saying it was fun sailing the boat and it is nice to come back to the dock at the end of the day.

Madina quietly moved into first place today with a third, second, and third place finishes. They attribute it to looking closely at rig tune in the changing wind strengths and good preparation of the boat for the series. Alberto Signorini's Sylphea are a solid second, three points back, followed by Nerone.

Racing continues tomorrow with three more races planned.

Event sponsors Deutsche Bank are hosting a gala dinner on the terrace of the Yacht Club Porto Rotundo this evening for owners and crew. Deutsche Bank offers Private Banking and Investment services tailored to their clients. The Boscolo Group is also a sponsor of the event and they have five star hotels throughout Europe, a culinary school, hotel engineering and tour packages.

Porto Rotondo ITA 27/06/02 – First day…Signorini takes the lead

Azure seas, sunshine and shifty, light winds greeted sailors on the 16 boats sailing on the opening day of the third and final regatta of the Deutsche Bank Farr 40 Mediterranean Championship series. The first two events were held in Naples, Italy and Porquerolles, France.

It was a day for shifting gears, staying in the wind and getting the wind shifts right. Alberto Signorini's Italian entry Sylphea did an excellent job of sailing consistently to emerge in first place by one point. They were battling throughout the day with another Italian boat, Massimo Mezzaroma's Nerone, who also mastered the tricky conditions, despite missing a shift in the second race.

Signorini said there was some advantage on the first race to stay on the left side of the course near the rocky island of Soffi for current and a bend in the wind. The breeze started at 60 degrees , went to 75, back to 60 and ended at 95 degrees. The last right shift that came in brought a little more breeze for the final race of the afternoon. Shear Terror and Sarastro were the first and second boats to reach the top mark in the third race and maintained a good margin on the fleet throughout the rest of the race to keep those positions for the finish.

There are enough races remaining in the regatta for anyone to change the standings. Out of the three races completed today, there were three different winners. Three more races are scheduled for Friday, three Saturday and two on Sunday.

Event sponsors who are supporting Farr 40 Class racing include Deutsche Bank, Boscolo Hotels and North Sails.

Miami USA 11/03/02 - Kilroy wins the Acura SORC and the US Championship
On the final day of racing at the 2002 Acura SORC Miami Beach finally delivered the idyllic sailing conditions for which it is known. Bright blue skies, warm sun and winds building to 15 knots over the morning provided a perfect backdrop to exciting racing.

In the Farr 40 class, defending champion John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti defended its class championship and also won the US National Championship. A second place finish in the day's first race sealed the deal for the El Seguendo, CA-based boat. The eleven point margin of victory at this year's event was significantly more comfortable than Samba Pa Ti's .25 point victory last year over Boston-based James Richardson's Barking Mad who was also runner-up this year.

"It's really special, not only to defend the title but claim a National Championship in the process," said Kilroy. "The field here this week was outstanding and I really need to single out our new tactician, Jeff Madrigali, who was huge for us this week in finding "good wind" in some challenging conditions."

Kilroy also was awarded the Mark H. Baxter Trophy, presented for the best performance by a Farr 40 in the regatta.

www.acurasorc.com

Miami USA 17/01/02 - Farr 40s ready to lock swords
Among the early registrants for the 2002 Acura SORC, March 6-10, in Miami Beach are the top two finishers in last year's Farr 40 class. John Kilroy, Jr. won the Farr 40 title aboard Samba Pa Ti in a close competition, defeating James Richardson aboard Barking Mad, by .25 points. Both return in 2002 to take another run at the Farr 40 title and the coveted Mark H. Baxter Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the low point yacht in the Farr 40 fleet.
Adding to the drama, Kilroy has "retired" 1999 Farr 40 World Champion Samba Pa Ti and will be helming a new boat, Samba Pa Ti II as well as sailing with several new crew, including Jeff Madrigali, who will be taking over the role of tactician from John Kostecki who is currently leading the Volvo Ocean Race aboard illbruck. Kilroy will break in Samba Pa Ti II at Key West Race Week and anticipates being up to speed in time to defend his Acura SORC Farr 40 title in the waters off Miami Beach.
"The Acura SORC is a terrific regatta and viewed by many as the preeminent annual Farr 40 event on the East Coast," said John Kilroy, Jr. "On Samba Pa Ti II we have identified the Acura SORC as one of our primary events for 2002, while working to optimize our team for the 2002 Farr 40 World Championships."
At the 2001 Acura SORC, Samba Pa Ti had several strong finishes early in the week and entered the final race needing a sixth place finish to wrap up the regatta. Unfortunately, Kilroy and crew found themselves in a tough spot at the start and combined with an aggressive tack by their main rivals, Barking Mad, slipped to 17th place halfway up the first weather leg of the race.
Samba Pa Ti eventually rounded the first mark in 13th place and went to work reeling in the rest of the fleet. They ultimately battled back to finish in sixth place, winning the class.
"The Acura SORC is a terrific regatta and as a tribute to how strong the Farr 40 class has come, its truly not over until the final race," explained Kilroy. "You learn to think big picture and recognize you must sail fast and smart to be successful."
In its 61st year, the Acura SORC will be raced off
Miami Beach, March 6-10, 2002. The regatta once again features racing on ocean courses with all shore-side activities headquartered at Miami Beach Marina.

Key West  USA 25/01/02 - No Play on Final Day
A mirror-like sea and the weather report of no significant breeze in a 20-mile radius led Race Officer, Ken Legler, to pull the pin after an 85-minute postponement on the Division IV course where the Farr One-Design classes were scheduled to have their eighth and final race of Terra Nova Trading/Yachting Key West Race Week.

The sound signal and the hoisting of Code Flag "N" were greeted almost universally by relief. After seven good races, no one in the Farr 40s wanted the series decided by a race that promised to be a lottery in fickle breezes that might not even allow the course to be sailed at all. There were those who had to take the disappointment on the chin, like Wally Tsuha, the co-owner, with Robert Hughes of the second placed Heartbreaker.

'We wanted to race and have the chance to win, without the throwout, we would have beaten them' said Tsuha, but recognised that George Andreadis and his crew in Atalanti XI had had an exceedingly good series to win the class, discarding the disqualification from the sixth race after a protest from John Kilroy with Samba Pa Ti. But he was certain that the two points difference between could have been eradicated with the final race.

Andreadis was all smiles having won the class at this regatta for three years in succession and also discovered that he had won the Yachting Magazine Trophy for Boat of the Week, which goes to the winner of the most competitive class, for the second successive time.

Key West  USA 24/01/02 - Hanging On by a Thread
With one race to come in the Farr One-Design Classes at Terra Nova Trading/Yachting Key West Race Week, the outcome of the Farr 40 class is finely balanced on a thread while the Mumm 30 class has been sealed in favour of an Australian visitor to the Conch Republic.

'It's difficult to stay out of the Jury Room when you sail in the Farr 40s,' said Robbie Haines, the tactician of George Andreadis' Atalanti XI, which was leading the regatta after seven races before answering the protest from John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti for an incident at the windward mark in the first of the day's races. 'The racing is so close that perceived infringements are inevitable.'

In this incident, Atalanti XI was disqualified, but her scoreline has been so consistently good that by dropping the sixth place she had scored, prior to the disqualification, in that race and counting a seventh, she is still on top of the points table

Earlier in the day, before racing began, Haines was standing outside the Schooner Wharf Bar where Atalanti XI and several of the other Farr 40s are moored, and countered a remark that they were leading the series after five races with, 'Let's see after today's races.' With a 6-3 scoreline in the two races, he remarked, 'It's still not over.'

Robert Hughes in Heartbreaker, two points behind Atalanti XI's score after a discard had been taken, had also lost the chance to be ahead in the second of the day's races. After a second in the first race, Hughes found himself without a clear lane in the next and could only make 21st place. That discarded, he sits on 26 points, two behind Andreadis.

The day belonged to Wolfgang Schaefer and his crew in Struntje Light, who won the first race and was second in the next, a position that might have been higher but for the unwelcome attention of Takashi Okura's Sled which led for four of the five legs. 'Everywhere we went, he sat on us,' complained Struntje Light's tactician, Michael Coxon, 'He could have won the race by two minutes if he had left us alone.'

Coxon must have loved the irony when Sled fell off the pace on the final leg to finish fifth, but the Japanese attention had allowed John Coumantaros to slip through to record his second win of the week, the only skipper so far to claim two bullets. Coumantaros was seventh in the first race of the day and with a discard is eighth, one point astern of Australia's Marcus Blackmore with Emotional Hooligan, who also had a good day with a fifth and a fourth.

Key West  USA 24/01/02 - Purely a game of inches
Racing in the Farr One-Design classes was so close on the second day of the Terra Nova Trading/Yachting Key West Race Week that Terry Hutchinson, tactician aboard Robert Hughes' Heartbreaker, described it as, 'Purely a game of inches.'

Heartbreaker had led into the leeward gate as the boats began the final beat of the second race, went left to the side that had been favourable all day, and lost a place to John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti before the finish. Hutchinson praised the crew of Heartbreaker, saying, 'So far, the crew has lost us no points and I have lost us five!'

Samba Pa Ti was subsequently disqualified from that race after a protest from Alexis Michas' Phish Food. The International Jury upheld the protest that Samba Pa Ti had not established an overlap at the leeward gate in proper time and Phish Food had been forced to bear off to avoid a collision. Heartbreaker therefore was declared the winner of the second race.

The first race of the day was equally exciting with much of it won and lost on the start line and the choice of which side to favour up the first beat. Former world champion, Jim Richardson, for the second time running, nailed the committee boat end, coming in at speed to roll the pack of boats which had hung head to wind and finished to leeward of his Barking Mad. It was a magnificent and spectacular performance.

John Coumantaros in Bambakou had also judged his timing well, but further down the line. He was, however, able to foot fast in clear air towards where tactician Chris Larsen had suggested there was more pressure in the breeze. There was more breeze on that side of the course and when Barking Mad tacked away, Coumantaros persisted, almost to the point of overstanding the weather mark, 1.9 miles up the track.

Rounding ahead, Coumantaros headed back to the side with the stronger breeze and was able to increase Bambakou's lead to the point where it became comfortable. From there, he covered on the second windward leg of the two round course, almost cruising home to win by 59 seconds from Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino, in turn four seconds in front of Stuart Townsend in Virago.

United Kingdom 12/01 - UK Owners heading to the Med ?
The following article appeared in the Late December 2001 edition of Yachts and Yachting magazine

"The UK Farr 40 owners will be spreading themselves far and wide over the next six months. Tony Buckingham's crew will have been to Sydney to race John Calvert Jones' spare 'Southern Star' in the class as the replacement event for what was the Telstra Cup regatta - the prelude to the Sydney-Hobart.

Early next year 'Warlord' and 'Victric' will join Buckingham's 'A Bit of a Coup' on the Farr 40's new Mediterranean Circuit. There will be three main events constituting the Mediterranean championship which are held on April 18-21 in Naples, May 16-19 on Porquerolles, near Hyeres in France, and June 27-30 at Porto Rotondo. Other major Farr regattas in the Med include Portofino, and St. Tropez as well as the Europeans - held July 4-7 at Costa Smerelda.

The Italians are now taking to the Farr 40 class with seven boats and more likely to be added through the winter which are likely to be joined by four French boats and the Brits."

Sounds like the Med is where the action is, come on out and join the fun!!

25/05/01 - FARR 40 Mediterranean Fleet established

Alberto Signorini is elected as Chairman of the newly-formed Farr 40 regional association.

John Calvert Jones, President of Farr 40 International Executive Committee has entrusted Italian owner Alberto Signorini from Naples with the organisation of a regional association with the task of running the racing activity of the Farr 40 Meditearranean fleet.

Farr 40 owners who attended the meeting held on 19 May elected Alberto Signorini as Chairman of the newly-formed Association with Dario Ferrari from Milan as deputy Chairman and Massimo Mezzaroma from Rome as Treasurer.

The target of the Class Association, which will have complete freedom of action regarding the sponsoring management of the Mediterranean Association, is to organize and manage a Mediterranean Racing Circuit that will award a 'regional title'. The Med Circuit will include the 2002 European Championship and the possible organisation of the Farr 40 World Championship in 2003 - the decision about this matter will be taken in the International class meeting to be held next June.

"After the cancellation of Admiral's Cup," said Alberto Signorini, " European Farr 40 owners and especially Italian owners who promoted the initiative, wished to have their own circuit in order to start the class in Europe and above all in the Mediterranean. The circuit will be complementary to the US one as it will be held from April to October and it will not overlap the classic US events from November to March."

At the moment the Farr 40 Class Association includes more than 120 yachts in the world: 30 of them are in Europe most of them based in UK.
